It’s amazing how writing can teach us about ourselves. In an earlier draft of the novel, my protagonist pursued all the wrong people, and my editor called me on it. Why would anyone want to read about someone so naive, illogical and misguided? That was a major eye opener, not just for the story. I started to consider who I invest my time, energy and resources in. I realized that I have often sought out people who are no good for me and neglected people who are wonderful. It doesn’t make sense, but at least now I realize it, and I can do something about it. And my protagonist is more worthwhile for it now, too!
